Denmark: Immigrants more prone to heart disease

Turks, Pakistanis and ex-Yugoslavs suffer from heart disease more than ethnic Danes.  For example, over a two year period, there were 80% more admissions of Pakistani men than of Danish men.

At the same time, they have a tendency to drop life-saving medicines such as beta-blockers and cholesterol lowering medicine, after getting a blood clot in the heart.

This according to a new study, conducted by PHD student Nana Folmann Hempler of the Research Centre for Prevention and Health at Glostrup Hospital.

Nana Folmann Hempler says that it's known that heart disease has a social basis, and that lifestyle and communication problems with doctors might play a role.

She recommends special preventive efforts for the immigrant group.
