Mahmoud el Doukhi, a Swedish-Lebanese living in Landskrona, was arrested during a visit to Lebanon and charged with being involved with al-Qaeda, according to his wife, Nada el Doukhi. His wife told City Landskrona that she is extremely concerned and that it's not easy to get them to believe you even if you didn't do anything. She says he was never involved in such things.

His wife told SvD that her husband was interrogated several times by both Sweden and Denmark regarding suspicions that he was involved with al-Qaeda in Lebanon.

In the winter the Swedish Security Service contacted him. He was interrogated and later called in for further interrogation, where a female Danish security service agent was present.

His wife says they spoke about people in Lebanon who were suspected of being involved with al-Qaeda. They showed him pictures of people and asked him questions, and said that it would be best for him if he answered. The interrogations took place in hotels in Malmö and Copenhagen. Several times he was paid for his cooperation.

She says he was persuaded by the Swedish police to go to Lebanon to complete the interrogation. They paid for his ticket and gave him 100,000 kronor. She's very concerned that nobody is taking responsibility for his arrest in Lebanon.

El Doukhi (36), father of two, went to Lebanon on April 18. He was interrogated several times in Beirut and according to his wife there was a Swedish policeman present.

He was arrested by the Lebanese police last Thursday, a few days before he was expected to return home. He wife is in regular touch with her husband's family in Sidon.

According to them he's suspected of having sent money and false passports to al-Qaeda in Lebanon, she says. Besides two brief occasions, she hadn't spoken with her husband since Thursday.

His wife says she just wants to know that the Swedish police are still involved and are taking responsibility for his safety, after they pressured him to go.

The Swedish foreign ministry confirms that Mahmoud el Doukhi was arrested in Lebanon. He's lived in Sweden for 11 years and is a Swedish citizen, They are in touch with his family and are now waiting for answers from the Lebanese authorities regarding the charges and where he is at the moment.

According to Amelie Heinsjö, editor for the ministry's press service, they will then make sure he gets a lawyer and that they get to visit him and see that he's doing well.

The assigned agent for the Swedish Security Service did not answer his phone, but his Danish colleague did so, saying that he did not want to talk to any journalists.
